Ace Frehley, Original KISS Guitarist, Passes Away at 74

Ricardo Fernandez

Ace Frehley, the pioneering lead guitarist and founding member of the glam rock band KISS, has died at the age of 74. His family confirmed that he passed away at home, surrounded by loved ones, following complications from a recent fall.

In a statement, Frehley's family expressed their profound sorrow, saying they were "devastated and heartbroken". They added, "In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth." The family also reflected on his extraordinary accomplishments, affirming that his legacy will endure indefinitely.

Frehley was instrumental in forming KISS in 1973 alongside Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss. The band quickly distinguished itself through its theatrical stage presence, characterized by elaborate full-face Kabuki-style makeup, flamboyant hairstyles, and towering platform boots.

KISS achieved widespread acclaim with hits such as "I Was Made for Lovin' You," "God of Thunder," and "Strutter." Their concerts were known for pyrotechnics and dramatic effects, underscoring the band's unique brand. Iconic imagery, including the lightning bolt "SS" in their logo and Simmons' signature long tongue, became synonymous with their identity.

Frehley parted ways with KISS in 1982 amid personal struggles and creative disagreements. Nevertheless, he sustained a successful solo career, founding the band Frehley's Comet and releasing several popular albums. He later rejoined KISS for a reunion period in the mid-1990s that lasted six years.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette, and daughter, Monique. Frehley's influence remains a significant chapter in the history of rock music, celebrated by fans and fellow musicians alike.
