The Calapan City District Jail has introduced e-Hearings through the Department of Information and Communications Technology's (DICT) Tech4ED program, eliminating the need to transport Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) to court for hearings. This digital system allows court proceedings to take place within the jail facility using computers connected to the internet, resulting in faster, more efficient trials.

By keeping PDLs inside the detention center during hearings, the program significantly cuts government expenses, reduces travel time, and minimizes security risks such as escape attempts and threats. The e-Hearings system proved especially vital during the Covid-19 pandemic, ensuring that judicial cases advanced without compromising the health of PDLs, jail staff, judges, and lawyers.

Joefrie Anglo, Jail Officer 3 and regional information officer of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Mimaropa, stressed the value of this innovation, stating, "Through e-Hearings, we are able to ensure that justice continues without unnecessary delays, while also prioritizing the safety and welfare of PDLs and personnel."

The Tech4ED initiative is designed to bring technology and information access to various communities, with applications extending into the justice sector. The integration of e-Hearings at Calapan City District Jail exemplifies how technological advancements can facilitate quicker, safer, and more humane judicial processes.
