Renowned German Actor Udo Kier Passes Away at 81
Carmela Diaz
German actor Udo Kier, noted for his unique charisma and extensive body of work in both independent and Hollywood cinema, has died at the age of 81 in California, according to reports. With a career exceeding fifty years, Kier featured in hundreds of films, often standing out with his compelling screen presence.
Kier gained prominence in the 1970s through iconic portrayals of classic horror figures like Frankenstein and Dracula, collaborating with legendary figures such as Andy Warhol and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. His pale appearance and dramatic style quickly distinguished him within the underground and arthouse film scenes.
In preparation for his role as Dracula, Kier reportedly survived on only salad leaves and water for a week to lose weight rapidly, at times becoming so weak he required a wheelchair.
He also worked extensively with Danish director Lars von Trier, appearing in films like "Manderlay," which explores the fictional continuance of slavery on a 1930s Alabama plantation, and the 2013 erotic drama "Nymphomaniac."
Beyond the indie film world, Kier embraced Hollywood roles, frequently portraying stylish antagonists and eccentric characters in productions such as "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "Armageddon," and "Blade."
Born Udo Kierspe in Cologne in 1944, he survived an Allied air raid on the hospital where he was born. Raised amid the hardships of post-war Germany, he moved to London at 18 to learn English. Over his lifetime, Kier worked internationally before ultimately settling in Los Angeles and later Palm Springs.
Known for his vibrant personality and affinity for nightlife, Kier once remarked, "I liked the attention. That's why I became an actor."
He passed away in Palm Springs, with the news confirmed by his partner, artist Delbert McBride. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
