President Marcos Jr. Inaugurates Angat Water Tunnel No. 5, Boosting Mega Manila Water Supply Capacity
Maria Santos
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. formally inaugurated the Angat Water Tunnel No. 5, a critical infrastructure project designed to expand water transport capacity from Angat Dam from 6 billion to nearly 8 billion liters per day. This modernized water tunnel will serve almost 20 million consumers across Mega Manila, further securing the metropolitan area’s water supply.
The newly commissioned tunnel alone can transport 1.6 billion liters of water daily, providing added capacity that eases pressure on existing tunnels. This increased capacity will enable essential rehabilitation and maintenance of the older tunnels without disrupting the water supply. Officials highlighted that upgrading and maintaining water conveyance infrastructure is key to ensuring uninterrupted and reliable service for millions of Filipinos.
In his remarks, President Marcos underscored the significance of the project in advancing climate adaptation efforts and reinforcing long-term water supply resilience. "Angat Water Tunnel No. 5 is a milestone for our national water security, improving our ability to deliver clean and reliable water even amidst climate uncertainties," he said.
The President attributed the success of the project to the administration’s "Maasahan at Masipag" governance approach, which prioritizes essential infrastructure modernization. "Our government is committed to being the reliable modernizer of essential national infrastructure. This project embodies our guiding message: Reliable Access. Tireless Modernization. Clean water for every Filipino household," he added.
The Angat Water Tunnel No. 5 is part of a broader strategy to secure Metro Manila’s water supply amid rapid urban population growth and increasing climate-related risks such as droughts and extreme weather events. By increasing water transport capacity, it assures consumers of a more consistent water supply and supports sustainable urban development.
Government officials expressed confidence that the modernization and expansion of water infrastructure under President Marcos's leadership will significantly strengthen the country's water security, promoting economic growth and improving the quality of life for millions.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by key water agencies, local government representatives, and stakeholders involved in the project’s completion.
As Metro Manila continues to grow, initiatives like the Angat Water Tunnel No. 5 demonstrate the current administration’s dedication to modern, reliable, and climate-resilient infrastructure.
