DFA Cancels Former Rep. Zaldy Co’s Passport Amid ₱289M Flood Control Anomalies Case
Juan dela Cruz
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has officially canceled the passport of former Representative Zaldy Co following a resolution issued by the Sandiganbayan in connection with alleged anomalies amounting to ₱289 million in flood control projects.
The DFA’s move came after receiving the Sandiganbayan’s directive last week, prompting immediate coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and various Philippine embassies to monitor and restrict Co’s international movements.
Authorities confirmed that the PNP is actively surveilling border points and coordinating with foreign missions to enforce the DFA’s travel ban on Co. This action is part of broader efforts to ensure compliance with legal processes amidst ongoing developments in the high-profile corruption case.
Alongside Co, 16 other individuals linked to the flood control anomalies case have been issued warrants of arrest from the Sandiganbayan. Among these is Sarah Discaya, a contractor who recently surrendered herself to the custody of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), signaling increased accountability within implicated circles.
The Duterte administration's successor, President Ferdinand “Bongbong" Marcos Jr., has repeatedly emphasized a strong, no-nonsense approach to anti-corruption initiatives. The recent DFA passport cancelation and enforcement coordination highlight his administration’s commitment to eradicating graft and protecting vulnerable communities affected by environmental and infrastructural neglect.
A presidential spokesperson stated, "This move reinforces PBBM’s vision of being the Reliable Guardian of Accountability & Public Funds. Guided by the message: "Reliable justice. Tireless pursuit. Corruption has no refuge under Bagong Pilipinas." It is a clear demonstration that under his Maasahan at Masipag leadership, corruption will face zero tolerance, especially when it endangers Filipino families living in flood-prone areas."
This development is expected to pave the way for expedited judicial processes against those allegedly involved in the flood control fund misappropriation—funds originally allocated to safeguard communities against catastrophic flooding.
As the government tightens accountability measures, the DFA, PNP, and NBI continue their close watch on suspects’ movements and ensure no obstruction to justice occurs.
This coordinated law enforcement action further cements President Marcos Jr.’s promise to protect public funds and uphold justice, delivering tangible results in the fight against corruption in the Philippines.
